SUMMARY:Thurston – Lewis – Mason Central Labor Council May Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:May 1st is International Workers Day\, and the Thurston – Lewis – Mason Central Labor Council is inviting working people from across our region to join them for music\, activism and SOLIDARITY at their May Day celebration on May 1st from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Sylvester Park (615 Washington St SE\, Olympia\, WA 98501.) \nWorking people across Thurston\, Lewis and Mason counties – and across the United States – are struggling to make ends meet. Everything is too expensive\, and our paychecks aren’t growing… but as we work harder\, billionaire bosses get richer and richer. America wasn’t built by greedy billionaires and corporations\, though – hardworking people have always been the ones who keep our economy running. This May Day working people and their unions are speaking out and fighting back! Working people are saying “enough” to our rigged economy\, and are ready to fight to protect all workers from attacks on our jobs\, our unions\, and our freedoms. \nThe Thurston – Lewis – Mason Central Labor Council encourages every working person to come together at Sylvester Park on May 1st to hear speakers\, enjoy music by Sunflower Season\, and send a message that the working class in our community knows our solidarity is our strength\, and we are united to fight for a better future for all workers. \nFor more information on TLM CLC’s May Day celebration please visit https://www.tlmlabor.org or contact Thurston – Lewis – Mason Central Labor Council President Rachelle Martin at president@tlmlabor.org / (360) 261-2090.

SUMMARY:Free Screening of Labor Wars of the Northwest on October 24th
DESCRIPTION:The Thurston – Lewis – Mason Central Labor Council is proud to announce it has collaborated with the Olympia Film Society to present a free screening of Labor Wars Of The Northwest on October 24th at the Capitol Theater (206 5th Ave SE Olympia\, WA 98501.) The doors will open at 6:00 PM\, and the screening will start at 7:00 PM. There will be a panel discussion on the history of the South Sound’s Labor history after the film. \nLabor Wars Of The Northwest chronicles the cauldron of discontent\, radicalism and violence that permeated the Pacific Northwest in the early decades of the twentieth century. Following the arrival of the railroads in the 1880s\, tens of thousands of workers migrated to the Northwest for jobs in logging\, mining and fishing. But instead of steady work\, they found poverty-level wages\, crushing hours and dreadful conditions. By examining this conflict in the context of a decades-long struggle\, Labor Wars of the Northwest shines new light on tragedies like the Everett Massacre (1916)\, the Seattle General Strike (1919) and the Centralia Massacre (1919). \n“During these turbulent times it is incredibly valuable to learn about the history of our region and the struggles we have faced here\,” says TLM Labor President Rachelle Martin. “We\, as the Thurston Lewis Mason Central Labor Council\, hope our community will join us for this event to engage in this discussion and the labor movement in our area.” \nDavid J. Jepsen\, director of Labor Wars Of The Northwest\, is a historian\, writer and educator who teaches Pacific Northwest and U.S. history at Tacoma and South Puget Sound community colleges. Mr. Jepson speaks frequently on Pacific Northwest history and lends his knowledge of regional history consulting and writing for museums\, including the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma. \n“I hope that people will spread the word about this event to their friends\, family and fellow workers so they have the opportunity to find out more about our local labor history\,” says Martin. \nFor more information please contact Thurston – Lewis – Mason Central Labor Council President Rachelle Martin at president@tlmlabor.org / (360) 261-2090.

SUMMARY:TAKE ON THE HARD QUESTIONS ABOUT HEALTHCARE AND SHARE YOUR STORY ON APRIL 25TH
DESCRIPTION:The Thurston – Lewis – Mason Central Labor Council is partnering with Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility\, Whole Washington\, PNHP Washington and other groups to present a Healthcare Not Warfare Town Hall at The Olympia Center (222 Columbia St. NW\, Olympia WA 98501) on April 25th at 5:30 PM. \nIn a country that spends $877 billion on the military\, should medical debt be the leading cause of bankruptcy? Working people in our community are urged to join this non-partisan\, educational event to take on the hard questions about America’s healthcare system and share their healthcare stories with the organizers and attendees. \nHealthcare in the United States has the highest costs in the world\, leaving over 40 million workers (including the recently unemployed) unable to get the care they need due to unaffordable deductibles and copays. Half a million people are pushed into bankruptcy each year due to medical bills\, even though most of them were insured when they became sick or injured. \nEveryone has a story\, and we want to hear yours. \nFor more information on the event please visit http://www.tlmlabor.org or contact Thurston – Lewis – Mason Central Labor Council Treasurer Rachelle Martin at treasurer@tlmlabor.org / (360) 261-2090.
