SUMMARY:Hanz Araki in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Hanz Araki returns to Bainbridge Island for an intimate one-night only show blending traditional Japanese shakuhachi flute with Irish influences. \nTICKETS\n$25 Members | $30 General Admission \nABOUT HANZ ARAKI\nHanzaburo (Hanz) Kodō Araki is a sixth-generation Kinko-Ryū shakuhachi sōke (grand master) \nThe shakuhachi is a relatively obscure end-blown\, bamboo flute; yet it produces perhaps the most quintessential sound associated with Japan and Japanese traditional music. Originally played by itinerant monks as a form of meditation\, it has endured centuries of change throughout Japan’s history. For six generations\, the Araki family has shepherded this tradition under the name of Kodō. Named for his great-great grandfather\, Hanzaburō made his professional debut in 1988 in Japan only four months after his first lesson from his father. In 2009\, the name Kodō was bestowed upon him by his father\, making the Araki lineage the oldest continuous bloodline in the history of Japanese traditional music; an unbroken connection to the roots of this haunting music. \nKodō VI taught at Keio University in Tokyo\, and is still in demand as an instructor for his command of Kinko-ryu (Kinko-style\, the primary branch of shakuhachi music). He has performed throughout the world and appeared on dozens of recordings and soundtracks. \nIn addition to his career in traditional Japanese music\, Hanz—as he’s commonly known—is an accomplished Irish flute and whistle-player and singer. Discovering and relishing the melodic and mechanical similarities between shakuhachi and Irish whistle\, Hanz applied his natural capacity and boundless curiosity to his Irish heritage. \nThree decades of musical exploration into Irish\, Scottish\, Japanese\, and American traditions has yielded his distinct style described by Fatea Magazine as “achingly beautiful.” Considered one of the most talented Irish musicians in America today\, flautist\, whistle player\, singer\, and Juno Award-winner Hanz Araki has been lauded by publications and audiences alike. \nHEALTH & SAFETY POLICY\nBIMA is following the COVID-19 recommendations and guidance from Kitsap Public Health District\, Washington State Department of Health\, and the CDC\, and will continue to update health and safety policies as needed. At this time\, masks and proof of vaccination is not required–but we welcome you to wear a mask if you choose. \nWe recommend visiting our website prior to this event for the most up-to-date policies.
