SUMMARY:May Day March In Olympia
DESCRIPTION:May 1st is known around the world as May Day\, or International Workers Day. In Olympia\, Washington the South Sound Labor School\, a committee of The Thurston – Lewis – Mason Central Labor Council\, will honor May Day with a march across the 4th Avenue Bridge and a Solidarity Gathering at Traditions Café. \nMay Day events will begin at 5:30 PM when working people will gather with tenants’ rights groups at the bridge at State Ave. NW and 4th and march across the bridge\, calling attention to the housing needs of working families in Thurston County. \nAt 6:30 PM a special “Solidarity Night” will be held at Traditions Café (300 5th Ave SW Olympia\, WA 98501.) Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the history of the Haymarket Martyrs of 1886 and the International Workers Day their arrests and execution inspired. \nThe South Sound Labor School has been holding similar Solidarity Nights on the first Wednesday of each month for the past year. These informal gatherings give working people in Olympia the chance to get to know the area’s Labor Community\, share what’s happening in their workplaces\, and find out about efforts to strengthen protections for working families in the region. The next Solidarity Night is scheduled for 6:00 PM Wednesday\, June 5th at the ILWU Local 47 Hall (913 Franklin St. NE Olympia\, WA 98501.) \nMay Day celebrations will continue on Sunday\, May 5th with a Working People’s Picnic at the Thurston County Fairgrounds. \nFor more information on the event please visit http://www.tlmlabor.org or contact Thurston – Lewis – Mason Central Labor Council Treasurer Rachelle Martin at treasurer@tlmlabor.org / (360) 261-2090.
