Railroads and the Checkerboard Landscape of the Cascades at the Newcastle Library

June 1, 2024 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Free

For adults.
The lands in the Central Cascade region were shaped by the railroads and the federal land grants they received in the 19th century. These established the checkerboard pattern of public and private lands weaving throughout our state, even within the national forests.
Charlie Raines, Director of the Sierra Club Cascade Checkerboard Project, shares the maps, stories and history as land ownership in our region evolved over 150 years.
